Garlic Seed At Adams Garlic

For the garlic grower, Music garlic seed will plant approximately 40 cloves for every pound of seed.  The plants are vigorous, tall, dark and vibrant green, and the germination rate is excellent.  I have read that Music appears resistant to many diseases that affect garlic.  Music is a reliable hardneck garlic to grow.

Hardneck garlic:

  • Is named for the long flowering stem in the center of the garlic bulb, called a scape
  • Produces a scape, which is edible
  • Consists of 4-12 large, easy-to-peel cloves in each bulb
  • Thrives in regions with cold winters.  Some varieties also do well in milder climates.
  • Offers greater richness and complexity of flavor than softneck counterparts
  • Stores for 6-12 months, depending on variety and storage conditions

Our garlic seed is categorized into two hardneck garlic subtypes.

  • We grow Music, German Extra Hardy, and Georgian Fire
  • Very hardy and will grow well in most of the US, though not as reliably in the southernmost US
  • Thick white garlic wrappers; clove wrappers are golden brown with purple streaks
  • Contain 4-6 very large cloves per bulb
  • Rich flavor with earthy muskiness, strong flavor
  • Store 9-12 months
  • The densest of all garlics and weigh more per unit of volume than other kinds or garlic; research suggests that this trait makes Porcelains a superior medicinal garlic, particularly because of high allicin content
  • One pound of garlic seed will yield approximately 40 plants, which yields 4-5 pounds of garlic

Purple Stripe

  • We grow Chesnok Red and Persian Star
  • The hardiest hardneck garlics, growing very well in the Northern US
  • Thick white wrappers with purple stripes; cloves are tall and crescent shaped with elongated tips
  • Very flavorful, particularly for baking and roasting
  • Contain 8-12 cloves per bulb
  • Store 6 months
  • One pound of garlic seed will yield approximately 60 plants, which yields 5-7 pounds of garlic
